CENTRE FOR AGRI-FOOD BENCHMARKING

In May of 2023, we shared the news of the first National Index on Agri-Food Performance being published. This work has been driven forward by a growing coalition of private-public partners that are working pre-competitively to present an integrated picture of sustainability for Canada's agri-food sector from food production to retail with the aim of improving upon it. UFA is one of the major contributing partners that form the 137-member coalition.

The National Index on Agri-Food Performance has entered into a new phase with the launch of the Centre for Agri-Food Benchmarking. This milestone builds upon the success of the Index pilot being advanced by the coalition to respond to the global imperative to reduce emissions, address the crisis of climate change and deliver on a breadth of sustainability expectations.

"Launching the Centre formalizes how the partners work together to improve and use Canada's first agri-food sustainability index in the marketplace. This novel step shows that Canada's agri-food sector can be a leader in how it presents its sustainability credentials for a more demanding food world," David McInnes, Executive Director and Founder, Centre for Agri-Food Benchmarking.

"The consolidation of information that the Index will provide, using common metrics, measurement tools and language, will lead to a better understanding and continued improvement and preservation of resources for the agriculture industry," says Selene Munro, Director, Sustainability.
